What is delta 9?
Delta 9 THC has gotten more recognition than any other cannabinoid for decades. That hasn’t changed, even today. Delta 9 is the THC people talk about when they mention THC. THC is one of many cannabinoids naturally produced in the cannabis plant. It’s psychoactive, which means you will experience a high if you consume it. Unlike other cannabinoids like delta 8, which only occurs in trace amounts, delta 9 THC is naturally abundant.
History
Though cannabis has been used across the globe for centuries, we’ve really only begun to understand its main active ingredient in the last century. In 1939, the Bureau of Narcotics of the US Treasury Department commissioned American chemist Roger Adams to identify the intoxicating component of cannabis. Subsequently, he discovered delta 9 THC (and was later criticized for noting its “pleasant effects”). While Adams was responsible for its identification, he was unable to isolate the compound. Decades later, Israeli chemist Raphael Mechoulam picked up where Adams left off. Mechoulam succeeded in isolating THC, and was ahead of his time in conducting numerous experiments in cannabis. We owe a lot of what we know today to these two pioneers.
How does it compare to other cannabinoids?
Delta 9 is considered fairly potent. Other cannabinoids, like CBD, are not psychoactive and don’t produce a high. CBD can actually temper a delta 9 high; a great life hack if you’re feeling a little THTF (too high to function). Unlike CBD, both HHC and delta 8 produce a high; however, they are less potent than delta 9. Delta 8 is generally estimated to be anywhere from half, to two-thirds as potent as its cousin, and HHC tends to lie in between the two.
THCA is the acidic form of THC; in its raw, original form, it’s not psychoactive. However, when you add heat (from a lighter, a vape, or the oven when you decarb), THCA literally becomes THC. So its potency, once activated, is identical since they are one in the same. For decades, it was assumed THC was the most potent cannabinoid out there. However, in 2019, a team of Italian researchers discovered a new cannabinoid that blows THC out of the water. THCP is estimated to be at least thirty times as potent as THC. If you have a high tolerance, this is clearly the cannabinoid for you.
How does it work?
Delta 9 THC is a phytocannabinoid, that is, a cannabinoid found in plants. Our bodies actually contain cannabinoids as well; these are known as endocannabinoids. We have a whole system inside of us for processing these endocannabinoids, aptly named the endocannabinoid system. The cannabinoids in our bodies bear a striking similarity on a molecular level to the cannabinoids found in cannabis. This means when we consume cannabinoids by smoking or eating them, they interact with our ECS. Our ECS is made up of two types of receptors; CB1 and CB2. If a cannabinoid attaches to our CB1 receptors, it produces a high. Delta 9 THC happens to attach to our CB1 receptors like a key fitting into a lock; it’s a perfect fit, and that’s why we feel as high as we do when we consume it.
