What is THCA?
THCA is a naturally occurring cannabinoid found in hemp and cannabis. It’s actually the acidic form of THC. In its raw form, THCA is not psychoactive. However, this changes when you add heat. When heat is added to THCA, it converts to the famously psychoactive THC. This heat can come from a lighter (if you’re smoking one of our THCA blunts, for instance), a vaporizer, or an oven when you decarb your flower before using it to make edibles.
The reason THCA is not psychoactive in its raw form is due to the shape of the molecule. Its shape is not able to attach to the CB1 receptors in our brains. When the heat converts THCA to THC, the molecular shape is compatible to fit with our CB1 receptors, which results in a high. If you wanted to enjoy THCA in its non-psychoactive form, you would need to consume raw cannabis or enjoy a specially made tincture. For those of us that enjoy getting high, however, the THCA blunts in our shop are an excellent way to do that.
Is it legal?
THCA is legal on a federal level… as long as it comes from hemp (which ours does). This is thanks to the passing of the 2018 Farm Bill, which legalized hemp on a federal level. By legal definition, hemp refers to cannabis plants made up of .3% or less delta 9 THC.
The great thing about THCA is that in most states, it’s not legally considered THC until you light it on fire. Since 2018, individual states have implemented their own rules and regulations regarding hemp-derived cannabinoids. Check this out for an overview of THCA legality. Bear in mind, however, that the state laws change and update constantly, so be sure to stay up to date with what’s going on in your area before you shop THCA blunts.
The farm bill was actually due for an update this past year, but it has been extended for another year. The bill is scheduled to be revisited in September of this year.
