HHC vs THC

If you’ve been enjoying hemp-derived cannabinoids for a while, then you know that not all of them are created equal.  With so many vendors out there, how can you know who to trust?  Due to lack of regulation, lab testing is absolutely essential to ensure that you’re getting quality you can count on.  Read on to learn more about lab tested HHC.

What is HHC?

HHC is a hydrogenated form of THC.  It was initially synthesized in the 1940s by American chemist Roger Adams.  Through the process of hydrogenation, Adams modified THC to create HHC.  Adams’ discovery didn’t become super mainstream until recently.  This is thanks to the passing of the 2018 Farm Bill which legalized hemp on a federal level.  Legally, hemp is defined as cannabis containing .3% or less delta 9 THC.  Since HHC can be derived from hemp, it has experienced something of a revival in recent years.

Like THC, HHC is psychoactive.  In terms of potency, it is estimated to lie somewhere between delta 8 and THC.

The farm bill aftermath

The intent of the farm bill was to increase hemp production for goods like clothing, rope, and food.  Unintentionally, however, this bill technically legalized all of the cannabinoids that could be derived from hemp.  This was extra exciting news for people who lived in states without legal cannabis.  Suddenly, they could enjoy other cannabinoids, legally, even if weed remained prohibited.

Unlike legal cannabis, however, these “new” cannabinoids were not subject to any type of regulation.  Really, anyone could get into the market without facing much red tape.  Who was checking?  Not the FDA, and not any state-run dispensaries.  Since all of this began, state legislators have responded in their own ways.  Some have imposed regulations, some have imposed bans, and others have simply affirmed the federal law.  That being said, there are still countless vendors who might not have their clients’ best interests at heart.

The importance of lab testing

When it comes to cannabinoids like HHC, lab testing is absolutely necessary.  The process of synthesizing HHC is perfectly safe, when handled by professionals.  Chemists start with hemp-derived delta 8 THC, which is then placed into a reducing environment.  Hydrogen is added, and it’s also necessary to use a metal catalyst.  When the process is complete, you have HHC.  But, it’s essential that the final product is tested to ensure that there are no leftover byproducts from the cannabinoid conversion process.  You want to make sure that you’re choosing lab tested HHC.  The last things you want to be smoking are remnants of metal catalyst, or any type of solvents that are used.
