What is HHC?
American chemist Roger Adams first synthesized HHC in the 1940s by adding two hydrogen molecules to THC. His discovery would remain largely unused until the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill. This bill legalized hemp on a federal level. Suddenly, various intoxicating cannabinoids, like HHC, were legal as long as they came from hemp.
Today, HHC is made from hemp-derived cannabinoids; for example, delta 8. In a lab, the material undergoes hydrogenation, which involves the addition of hydrogen molecules and a metal catalyst. Margarine is actually made from vegetable oil using the same process.
In terms of potency, HHC is more potent than delta 8, but less potent than traditional delta 9 THC. The high includes “feelings of euphoria, elevated mood, altered visual and auditory perception, changes in heart rate and body temperature, slowed reaction times, [and] slowed perception of time”. Because it is less potent than delta 9, users can experience less anxiety and paranoia than they do with conventional THC.
HHC Safety and You:
Federally legal, a less intense high, and feelings of euphoria? What’s not to love?! One of the drawbacks of HHC is that there is little research on its effects. At this point, we can’t say for certain whether or not it produces some type of long term side effect. Since it is so similar to THC in terms of effects, it’s likely that long term effects would be comparable to those produced by THC, but we don’t know for sure.
Like delta 9, HHC can produce its own share of mild side effects. According to High Times, these may include dizziness, dry mouth, drowsiness, impaired memory, increased heart rate, anxiety, and changes in appetite. Just like any other substance that alters your state of mind, be sure to indulge responsibly. Though anxiety may occur, this is still generally regarded to be less intense or likely than delta 9 anxiety. Know yourself and your limits; if you’re new to HHC, start with a smaller dose.
HHC Safety and Shopping:
Now that you know how to be safe while under the influence of HHC, you need to know how to choose products safely. The market of hemp-derived cannabinoids is not subject to any type of federal regulation. Certain states are implementing their own requirements (age restrictions, labeling policies, licensing, etc), while others currently permit the sale of these products freely. Regardless of where you live, not all HHC is created equal. Just about anyone can create a website claiming to sell HHC, and there’s tons of other brands that are even available at gas stations. So how do you choose a product responsibly?
Look for products that are lab tested. This is vitally important when it comes to HHC safety. You want to be sure you know what you’re getting. Companies that aren’t up front about this information don’t have your best interests at heart. That’s why we feature our lab reports right on our site so you can see for yourself that you’re getting exactly what you think you’re getting.
