If you’re here, you’re probably familiar with HHC. It’s one of the many trendy cannabinoids that stepped into the spotlight within the last few years. Now, there’s a new guy in town: HHCP. HHC vs HHCP; what’s the difference? Read on to learn where these cannabinoid cousins come from and why they’re great choices for the next time you’re looking to really feel something.
Where do they come from?
HHC is a naturally occurring cannabinoid. It’s typically only found in trace amounts of hemp and cannabis plants. Most, if not all, of the HHC currently on the market is made from hemp-derived delta-8 THC, or CBD. To make HHC, that hemp-derived cannabinoid is hydrogenated. This process is actually similar to the way margarine is made.
HHCP is also made through hydrogenation. We’re going to get into some chemistry here, but it’ll be worth your while to truly understand what makes this new cannabinoid so special. To make HHCP, HHC undergoes that hydrogenation process again. The result? Two more carbon atoms. HHC has five carbon atoms while HHCP has seven.
How do they feel?
The addition of the carbon atoms makes HHCP significantly more potent than HHC. According to High Times, “adding to HHC’s side chain means that the cannabinoid binds to CB1 receptors up to 30 times more efficiently, leading to about 10 times the potency of HHC’s high”. A cannabinoid’s interaction with the CB1 receptors in our bodies endocannabinoid system is responsible for the high we feel. So, if you’re looking to get totally toasted, this is definitely the cannabinoid for you.
HHC, on the other hand, provides a more mild, stimulating experience. I personally love it for day time use because I get the perfect buzz without experiencing the lethargic burnout that I often get with traditional delta 9 THC. It really is an ideal high for feeling good but still being able to continue on with your day. The experience is definitely less paranoid than delta 9, but still takes you where you want to go.
HHC vs HHCP: Origins
So now that we understand the key differences between the two cannabinoids, it’s time to explore their roots. HHC was actually discovered in the 1940s by American chemist Roger Adams. Because it’s such a small component of hemp and cannabis, it really didn’t become mainstream until recently. When the 2018 Farm Bill was passed, it legalized hemp on a federal level. Suddenly, there was a huge market for psychoactive cannabinoids… as long as they came from hemp. That’s why there have been so many “new” ways to get high lately. Our site is full of ways to enjoy the unintended benefits of this bill for yourself.
HHCP didn’t even exist until recent years. We can’t talk about its origins without first discussing THCP. THCP was discovered by total accident in 2019 by a team of Italian scientists. Like HHCP, it’s insanely potent due to its extra carbon atoms. Scientists realized they could apply the same chemistry to HHC, and created HHCP.
